The author and Mililián Galis Riverí (b. 1939).
Galis is widely considered to be the “elder statesman” of Afro-Cuban percussion in Santiago. His groundbreaking book La percusión en los ritmos afrocubanos y haitiano-cubanos (Percussion in Afro-Cuban and Haitian-Cuban Rhythms) is the most authoritative source available on the conga's early history. This text and interviews with Galis were vital sources for this project.
